Sunday Services - 10:00 a.m.

March 2:   The Gospel of John, Paul, George and Ringo    Rev. Julie Forest
While Rev. Kathleen is in Boston attending a UUA conference, guest  minister Rev. Julie Forest will be in the pulpit.  Toni Rogers will be the Service Leader.

March 9:    Where 4,000 Are Gathered    Rev. Kathleen  A. Green
There is no feeling quite like it – spending several days in workshops, fellowship, and worship with thousands of Unitarian Universalists!  The General Assembly is the best opportunity we have to connect with our UU brothers and sisters from all over the country (and even beyond).  Aside from all of the hoopla and planned gatherings, the potential for something wonderfully surprising is there, every year!  Our choir will be singing today.

March 16:     Categorical Compassion           Rev. Kathleen A. Green
At our service auction in November, Summitarian Elly Dotseth was the highest bidder for my sermon offering, and this service is result!  After conversation with Elly, I’ve been developing ideas about an evolved compassion that I believe is sorely needed in today’s society.  “Categorical Compassion” presents a tremendous challenge for all of us.  Come and explore this new idea.

March 23:     Annual Flower Communion Service    Rev. Kathleen A. Green & Connie Henry
On this Easter Sunday we will come together as an intergenerational community for song and story as we celebrate our annual flower communion.  Please remember to bring a flower with you, and consider bringing an extra one for a guest.
Our choir will be singing today.

March 30:     Reaching Tranquility   Gwen Baldwin
What path can lead to a deep calm in a person’s heart and soul? Katy Orr, Chris Stuessy and Pat Summers will share their personal struggles to reach inner peace.  The Close Enough Band will be performing today.

From the Minister’s Mailbox
Dear Ones,
In many ways it is hard for me to believe that we’ve only four months left in our regular programming year!  So many changes and events since my arrival in August.  It is good to ‘check-in’ as a community during the year and I’m grateful to the Committee on Ministry for arranging the focus group process on March 9.  Please make every effort to be here for that event.  Whether you’ve been at Summit since its inception, or you have only just begun to feel like a Summitarian, you are valued and your voice needs to be heard.  I, for one, am looking forward to seeing the results and spending the next few months working and fellowshipping together at our many fabulous events and in our valuable programs.  There is much work to be done and even more fun to be had.
Speaking of work and fun, I will be at the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) offices in Boston for a few days at the beginning of March, for a special conference for first-year ministers.  We will be meeting with UUA executives - sharing, planning, worshipping, and socializing.  I must confess that it will be difficult for me to keep my bragging at a minimum!  After all, Summit is an undeniably awesome congregation that is clearly alive and kicking!  I will share the many ways Summit members and friends care deeply for one another and their minister, bring problems and concerns to the table immediately, are dedicated to quality worship, recognize the challenges of growth while being open to the potential, are open to hearing new ideas and trying new things, commit themselves to reaching out to the wider world, and consistently wear their nametags every week!  Like I said, it won’t be easy to keep my bragging in check, but I’ll try.  I will be gone from March 2-5, returning to the office on March 6.  See you at Summit in the beautiful and blessed month of March.
       Yours for the good cause,
       Rev. Kathleen

From the President’s Desktop
At the last meeting of the Board, we spent some time talking about how to maintain good communication within the congregation, despite our growing size.  Some time ago we added twice weekly eNewsletters (emailed) for time dependent notices.  If you are not receiving these, please let Linda at the office know so we can add you to the list.  Our monthly Newsletter will also be going electronic, unless you specifically request a mailed copy.  This will save us printing and postage costs, and will also mean you can find the newsletter on the Summit website whenever you want.  The website itself includes a calendar of events as well as a directory of members and friends, as well as many other useful items.  LaMar Rogers is working on revising the web to make it more user friendly and informative.  Please be patient while it is under reconstruction, and let LaMar know if you have suggestions or would like to help!
The Board is also instituting a new practice of monthly Board announcements.  On the Sunday after the Board meeting (generally the fourth Sunday of the month), there will be a short announcement at the beginning of service summarizing key items from the meeting.  Board members will be available after service to answer questions and are available every week for comments and suggestions.  More details will be included in the monthly Newsletter and eNewsletter as well (see for example the article included in this newsletter on the Task Force on Growth).
We hope these changes are helpful.  Please let us know if you have other suggestions.  We realize that there is a lot going on at Summit, now that we have our own facilities and a growing membership.  However we value our close and caring community and want to keep it that way!    Yours in fellowship, Debbie

From Our Music Committee Chairperson
It appears that some hymnals are missing from the sanctuary. I counted 106 in the sanctuary two weeks ago, and we had 118 at one point when Tom Owen-Towle was our interim minister. If you happen to have moved a hymnal to another room or taken one home for some reason, would you please return it to the box under or by the New Members table in the greeting area. After two or three weeks we can then determine how many more hymnals we need to purchase.

Religious Exploration for Children and Youth
We are just beyond the halfway point in this Sunday school year, and lots is going on. Highlights include:
First and second graders will ably and enthusiastically coach you in walking their labyrinth, part of their group’s field test of the Creating Home curriculum.
Third, fourth and fifth graders are delving into stories from different religious and cultural traditions, with artistic and dramatic accompanying activities.
Sixth graders are working through the field test Toolbox of Our Faith with gusto. A lesson with the magnifying glass as a metaphor for questioning included shining sunbeams through the magnifying glasses onto balloons until the balloons popped, a memorable activity.
Each Coming of Age youth is at work with his or her mentor on community service projects of their own design. The group is also making plans for their Wilderness Retreat in April. The date for the Coming of Age Sunday service has been changed to June 1. Please mark your calendars and come to support the youth as they present the faith statements they’ve been working toward all year.
UUMA/LREDA Meeting: At the end of January, I somewhat reluctantly and slightly skeptically headed north with Rev. Kathleen to the Unitarian Universalist Ministers’ Association / Liberal Religious Educators’ Association annual meeting in Rancho Palos Verdes. Reluctant and skeptical because how could I rationalize several days at a gathering not knowing in advance how constructive it would be when what I really should be doing was all kinds of Summit Children’s RE work right here at home? Attending were several dozen ministers and about fourteen RE directors from the UU Pacific Southwest District, stretching north to San Luis Obispo and east to all of Arizona. The two workshops presented were about engaging youth in our congregations and about reconsidering the UU Sources. Both were constructive, and what we learned will be useful in our work at Summit. But what has stayed with me more was the time in between the workshops. Mealtimes, between workshop times and the social hour before dinner were cheerily collegial. The group included a number of memorable and admirable characters, some even awe-inspiring in their wisdom and humor. The free exchange of ideas, resources and experiences was constructive and exciting. (I’d just been hoping for constructive; exciting was frosting on the cake.) This meeting changed “Unitarian Universalist Pacific Southwest District” from a name that I see on e-mails to a collage of the people I met at this meeting:  hardworking, committed, creative individuals working to help us all find common ground and to improve that ground as we can in the time that we have.

MANY THANKS to our February volunteers: Mahrya Hafner, Suzanne McQuaide, Jim Weed, Mary Braunwarth, Patti Quint, Joan Chan, Mark Wheeler, Alan McQuaide, Doris Wascher, Michelle Beauchamp, Jack Slagle, Diane Slagle, Norma Pizarro, Ann Olson, Katy Orr, Leslie Robard, Chris Steussy, Teresa Palombo, Elinor Weed, Neal Biggart, Tyra Myles, Mark Bryning, Pierre Vaughn, Joe Braunwarth, Shelley Lekven, Glenn Sasaki and Alix Hart.
Please contact me with any questions, concerns or ideas.

TASK FORCE ON GROWTH
Summit has been blessed by an increase in membership, as well as increased attendance at both Sunday services and our religious exploration program.  The Board has therefore established a task force to investigate and make recommendations to the Fellowship on issues brought about by this growth.  Specifically the group has been asked to 1) determine how best to accommodate increased Sunday service attendance over the short term (next 6 months to a year), 2) determine how best to accommodate increased Sunday service attendance over the long term (1-5 years), and 3) address other issues related to increased membership (including RE growth and integration of new members). Members will include:  Miles Beacham, Mark Bryning, Jai Ghorpade, Barbara Sorenson, Mark Weedman, Jennifer White, and Rev. Kathleen Green (ex officio).  Feel free to contact any of them or any Board member with your comments or suggestions.

Save the Date – Congregational Focus Groups
Your opinions and preferences matter.    On Sunday, March 9 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, at Summit the Committee on Ministry will be conducting Congregational Focus Groups to assure that Summit is meeting your needs.  Lunch and Child Care will be provided.  Please plan to join us.  We value your input.
The Committee on Ministry (COM) exists to nurture, guard and further right relationships among the ministries of Summit by fostering an environment of mutual respect, open communication and trust within the congregation as a whole.
Summit conceives its programs as ministries to the congregation and the surrounding community.  The ministries at Summit are mutually shared among the ordained Minister and the laity.  Our pastoral presence, our religious education and our social action are all grounded in the ministries we give and receive from one another.
We sincerely hope that you can attend these Focus Groups.

Social Action Corner
Service Is Our Prayer
Helping Others In East County and Beyond Our Borders
UUSC Guest at Your Table:  Forty-eight households contributed over $1,336.  With Spirit Rock match (of contributions over $100), our congregation's matched total was $2,161.  Detailed information on how the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee will use our contributions within and outside the United States is available at
http://www.uusc.org.  Thank you.  (Vic White, Local UUSC Representative)
Empty Bowls – The sale of bowls and soup at our Empty Bowls Event in January netted $1520. All these funds went to Crisis House and will be used to feed the hungry in East County. Awesome job, Summitarians!
Also, regarding all the bowls, half of the bowls were contributed to our group by potters from all over San Diego County. Lynn Render and Lynn Zimmer, two potters who are members of the Clay Artists of San Diego (CASD), graciously gave left over bowls from their Empty Bowls drive (from last year) to Summit. Bowls were collected from the Clay Associates on Adams Avenue, the San Diego Potter’s Guild, UCSD Craft Center, Grossmont College Ceramics Department, San Diego State Ceramics Department , Mesa College Ceramics Department, Clay Artists of San Diego, Plum Pottery in South Park, the San Diego Ceramics Connection, as well as some high schools. Rene Schad and Elly Dotseth transported the bowls here. Thanks to all!

How Can You Help In Summit Social Action Efforts?
Financial: Hygiene Packets: Stop by our Hygiene Packet Store on either March 9th or 16th to purchase complete or parts of hygiene packets for the homeless.  The packets will be given to Crisis House for distribution to those in need. Questions? Contact Laurel Bernstein.
Fair Trade Coffee: Fair Trade coffee products will be for sale on Sunday, March 9.  Look for our table just to the right of the door as you enter the Salon.  When you purchase these Fair Trade products you are supporting a most worthwhile cause and also adding a little profit to our Summit budget.  We have 5 different varieties on hand, so stop by and see if your favorite is there.  If not, you might request that I order it for next month. Questions or orders? Contact Lynne Slaughter.
People Power:  Interfaith Shelter Network: This March, Summit volunteers will be supporting both St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church and First United Methodist in La Mesa.  At this point, we have enough volunteers to provide dinner for the homeless at each church each night (Thursdays: March 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th).  But, if you would like to be added to the "meal preparation backup team" for any of these four nights, please contact Vic White (at
619-543-9890/vicctorwh@aol.com).  Thank you.
Amnesty International: Our next meeting is Monday, March 24th at 7:00pm in the conference room. Please join us! Questions? Contact Viraj Ward.
Please join us for the next Social Action Committee meeting in Conference Room #1 at 8:30 am on Sunday, March 9th. Newcomers welcome! Questions? Contact Gary Baldwin.

Summit Knitting Ministry
The Summit Knitting Ministry will meet on Thurs., March 6, at 1:30pm in the Salon.  We will also offer a second meeting time this month – Tues., March 11, at 9:30am in the office conference room - in order to accommodate other schedules.  You can choose to attend one or both of these meetings.  All are welcome to join us in this new endeavor to reach out to the community among us and beyond us.  Please contact Rev. Kathleen for more information

Within the Congregation
♥  There will be a memorial service for Belle Kuhwald on March 8th, at 3:00 pm.  Members and friends are invited to attend.  Belle’s son, Rev. Kurt Kuhwald, will conduct the service, assisted by Rev. Kathleen A. Green.
♥   In the S.D. Cluster’s ENews there was a tid-bit about Summit’s very own Professor Sanford (Sandy) Bernstein. It seems Sandy’s research in Molecular Biology of the Cell is featured on the cover of Science Journal. (
www.sdsuniverse.info) Congratulations!
♥   We have a number of folks that are in need of transportation to Sunday services, meetings or doctors appointments.  If you are able to offer this service to a Summitarian near you, please contact Rod Orth. (See your Summit Directory.)

THANK YOU TO OUR WONDERFUL MEMBERS & STAFF!
The Board of Directors would like to thank the following for their generous support of our fellowship.  We appreciate all you do to make Summit a wonderful place to be!
Carolyn and Tom Owen-Towle for donating the lovely table in our Salon to complement the wonderful Unitarian Universalist inspired print donated by Kathleen and Mitchell Green.
Pat and Mark Bryning for donation of water cooler (and water!) in the office.
Gwen Curry and the aesthetics committee for organizing the rotating art exhibits in the Greeting Room/lobby and office area, which are always beautiful and uniquely enjoyable.
All the office volunteers for their generosity of time and their reliability.
All the singers and musicians who enrich our Sunday services throughout the year, and to Neal Biggart for stepping forward (literally!) as interim choir director.

Summit's Celebration Sunday: Let Our Light Shine
Sunday April 6th
Please plan to attend a breakfast celebration to renew our spiritual and financial commitments to Summit UU Fellowship. Our celebration will take place on April 6th in the sanctuary during the Sunday service. In addition to an inspiring program, you will be asked to complete your annual commitment card to support Summit's extraordinary efforts as a beacon of liberal religion in East County. You will also be updated about the final year of Summit's capital campaign and about Summit's solar energy project. Although we will be taking a break from campaign visits to your home this year, we still look forward to your enthusiastic support of Summit's employees, facilities and programs. For more information, please contact Sandy Bernstein or Neal Biggart.

We Need Volunteers for Celebration Sunday
Because we have had so many major events in the past year, we would like to give our usual volunteers a break and encourage those of you who would be willing to contribute either time or muscle for the Celebration Breakfast to volunteer for one of the committees below. We need new volunteers and a few experienced hands for:
Food: Help plan the menu so that the food can be placed on the tables beforehand, determine how to get the food prepared, etc.
Set up: Set up tables and chairs, set the tables with cloths, napkins, dishes, etc.
Clean up and take down: Clear dishes and take down tables, put chairs back in normal positions, etc.
Table Stewards: Be assigned a few people whom you will invite to sit at your table, oversee the pledge cards, answer questions as needed, etc.
We would truly appreciate your help. So if you are willing and able, please call Neal Biggart, (619) 441-9874 or email her at
nealbiggart@mac.com.    Thanks from the heart. Neal

Program Spotlight
This month’s spotlight shines on a new group: SUUF Fundraising Events Committee
FEC Mission Statement: The Fundraising Events Committee’s mission is to raise substantial funds toward Summit Unitarian Universalist’s annual budget. The FEC is committed to inner and outer community engagement, enrichment, and development and will focus its fundraising efforts with this intention.
FEC Commitment Statement: As FEC leaders, we commit ourselves to act with integrity as we reach out for participation in fundraising from the Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. This means, the leaders of the FEC will not ask any member or friend of SUUF to do participate in any fundraising effort they would not do themselves.

From The Chair:
Well members and friends of Summit, we are almost there, and with still four months to go! Because of you (Yes, YOU!) our fiscal goal of $20,000 has almost been reached.  Together we have raised $19,068.35.   We still have a few fundraising events left so we believe we can reach, if not surpass our goal.  Our spring event plans include a Gourmet Ice Cream Sunday (or, sundae) Social, a concert and art sale.  Keep your eyes open and your ears clean! There is more to come!
On a more personal note, as of June 30th, 2008, I will be stepping down from the Fundraising Events Committee and as the Auction Chair for the year 2008. It has been a great privilege to give my time and energy to this wonderful community. Myself, and the SUUF Board will be looking for someone to fill my volunteer slots, please give to your community.
My heart felt thanks to the strong and caring women of this committee. Thank you Mary Braunwarth, Lisa Garvey and Deena Tuttle for your hard work and support. Together you have been a joy to work with, as individuals’, I feel a friendship has grown that only comes from acceptance, commitment and kindness. I will miss our working together  with all of you.
My best, Pilar Placone-Willey

JOIN THE NEW CAMPUS GREETERS!
A very important part of our hospitality is greeting newcomers and our own Summit community members each Sunday. When new members join our Fellowship they make a commitment to serve in the new role of Campus Greeter several Sundays during their first year. These Campus Greeters will be posted at either end of the covered walkway where they will welcome each person arriving on the campus and, if they are new to Summit, refer them to the Visitor Hosts (formerly known as greeters) at the Visitor’s Table. In addition to new members, we will need others to act as Campus Greeters occasionally. This will be a fun and easy job, requiring only 20 minutes on a Sunday morning. Couples or a parent and child old enough to enjoy greeting are welcome to serve. Sign up on the Campus-Greeter clipboard posted in the Greeting Room or contact Patti Robison-Heyer or Jennifer White, Campus Greeter Coordinators: 858-569-4955 or 619-543-9890

Attention All Summit Artists
All artists that are interested in displaying their work at Summit, please call Gwen Curry, 619-461-8264, email
gwendacurry@cox.net, or  Joan Chan, 619-466-4760, email jmcpc@cox.net.  We are interested in works that can be hung the walls of the Greeting Room and the Office.  This includes paintings of any media and textiles such as quilts and weavings.  Group shows will also be possible.  Each show will have an opening and reception for the artist(s).

Summit Singers Choir
Summit choir will be singing twice a month during the Spring und the direction of Neal Biggart, interim director.  If you like to sing, please join us at rehearsals on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 pm.
A task force to find a replacement for our last choir director has been formed and includes Rev. Kathleen Green, President, Debbie Wingard, Personnel Chair, Sandy Bernstein, and Finance Chair, Lisa Garvey, and Sunday Services Committee Chair, Ed Henry, who is also chairing this committee. In order to find the best available person, the committee has placed a position announcement on the UU Musicians Network web-site, in the Cluster Newsletter and our own newsletter, and on music department bulletin boards at local colleges and universities.

Lunch Bunch
All Summitarians who would like more fellowship and food after Sunday services are welcome to gather with the lunch bunch.
The chicken potpie is excellent at Mimi’s, 9812 Mission Gorge Rd., Santee, so let’s start off there on March 2. On the 9th, we’ll meet at Coco’s, 1025 Fletcher Pkwy, El Cajon.  Jimmy’s at 6935 Mission Gorge Rd., Santee would be great on March 23.  And lastly, we shall dine at Michael’s Grill, 9621 Mission Gorge Rd., Santee, on March 30.
If you intend to join us, please print your name on the hanging sign-up sheet in the Fellowship lobby during the coffee time so we can phone ahead at 11:30 for reservations. See you there!

Meet the Minister on the 2nd Sunday of the month.
Visitors and new members are welcome to join Rev. Kathleen after the worship service on the 2nd Sunday of the month, March 9, from 11:30-noon.  We will meet in the office for informal discussion in order to get to know one another and give you an opportunity to ask the minister questions regarding Unitarian Universalism and the Summit community.

Our next New Member Welcome Ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 13.  If you would like to be included in this special ceremony, and did not attend the Summit Orientation sessions in Feb., please contact Rev. Kathleen to make arrangements.

Summit Opportunities for You!
As the new year begins, and we shift our schedules and lives a bit with resolutions, or perhaps new goals, consider putting Summit at the top of your list.  We have a number of opportunities for volunteers and would greatly appreciate your time and talent.  With each of these opportunities we are asking for only a 4-month commitment – just to the end of the church year (June)!

Hospitality Crew:   Join Summit’s hostess with the mostest, Janet Dixon, prepare our coffee and refreshment table for social time after the service on Sundays.  With just 5 crew members, each person would only have to take care of preparations once a month!  Janet will provide training.  If you enjoy our social time on Sunday, and think this is an important part of what Summit offers to our community and guests each week, please contact Janet 619-465-1160, and let her know you want to be part of the Hospitality Crew.  This opportunity does not require any committee meetings!

Office Volunteer:  Summit’s office volunteers are an integral part of our day-to-day operations.  Administrator, Linda Peck, is looking for additional help on Thursday mornings starting in late spring.  If you enjoy speaking on the phone, greeting people, and helping with light clerical work, you will be right at home in our office.  Please contact Linda, 619-562-0833, for more info.  This opportunity does not require any committee meetings!

Sunday Set-Up Team:  If you are more of a behind-the-scenes type of person, and can get to Summit at 9:30 on Sunday mornings, you are just who we’re looking for to serve on a Sunday Set-Up Team!  Both our Membership Committee and Sunday Services Committee can use some help in seeing that our greeting room and sanctuary are ready on Sunday mornings.  A team of 4 or 5 will ensure that no one person is responsible more than once a month.  This opportunity simply requires a willingness to set up chairs if necessary, make sure that hymnals are in place, etc.  Again, no committee meetings!  Please contact Rev. Kathleen 619-562-0833 and let her know you’re in!

Facilities Leader:  Who do you contact when you notice a light bulb is burned out or a faucet is leaking at Summit?  We have a group of handy members willing to help and a budget for professional repairs if extra expertise is needed, but we need someone to be the point of contact and to coordinate the efforts.  Please contact Debbie Wingard at 619-287-6960 and let her know if you are the one!

Grounds Leader:  Have a green thumb?   Enjoy working outside?  Want to help Summit look it’s best?  Join Al Mork as co-leader of a team of volunteers who augment the efforts of our weekly gardener.  We plan to increase the gardener’s hours in 2008, and Joe Braunwarth is leading an effort to create a landscape master plan, so should be a great time for gardening at Summit!  Please contact Debbie Wingard 619-287-6960 for more info or to volunteer.

Directory Bandaid
The Directory Update will be available at the end of March.  If you  weren’t able to attend Sunday services in February, you may not have corrected you contact information.  If anything has changed since our pictorial directory was made, please contact Linda Peck with you current contact information,
summitunitarian@sbcglobal.net.

Flowers for  Sunday Services
The flowers at our Sunday services always add a soft spirit to the room.  If you would be interested in commemorating a personal special occasion or honoring a loved one by providing a flower arrangement for a particular Sunday, contact Barbara Jania-Smith at 619-461-7039. You and your occasion will be mentioned in that Sunday’s order of service.       Thank you!

Solar Electrical System
Norm Dessel  has donated his time and expertise to design and contract for a solar energy system. There remains a short time to qualify for state rebates. Although we are hopeful that we can raise the $30,000 needed, we can cancel the contract should we fall short. Several members have approached me wishing to, in addition to their pledges, donate funds toward the solar energy system. We are happy to answer any questions.    ~ John McQuaide, Treasurer

Pacific Southwest District Assembly
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Do you like meeting people?  Do you like playing host/hostess?  Do you want to show off our wonderful San Diego Cluster?  Then you would be perfect as part of the Registration/Hopitality Team at the PSWD Assembly in April 25-27.  We will gather once the week before the event to put together the registration packets, then man the tables on Friday afternoon as UUs from around the District arrive at the Marriot Hotel in Del Mar.
Volunteers are needed to man the tables throughout the weekend, as well as to direct visitors to various workshops, meals and other events.   Be a part of this year’s Assembly, and show off our great Cluster!  If interested, please contact Joan Kanter,
jkanter@ucsd.edu.
A San Diego Cluster Committee is helping coordinate District Assembly which will be held on April 25-27 in San Diego County. If you're interested in volunteering, please contact chair Rev. Jim Grant at
