Sunday Services - 10:00 a.m.
Feb. 3: The Sound of Silence Rev. Kathleen A. Green
An Indian yogi said “Before speaking, consider whether it is an improvement upon silence.” This same man once went nineteen years without speaking! Dare I say he obviously wasn’t a Unitarian Universalist? My experience tells me that some of us are actually uncomfortable with silence; feeling a need to fill the silences in our life with sound. Together, let’s consider what benefit silence might hold for us in our own lives, as well as in the life as a religious community.
Feb. 10: The Artful Spirit – Love the Arts Sunday Rev. Kathleen A. Green
For centuries, human beings have found spirituality in the arts. The connection is deep and undeniable. On this Sunday, we will enjoy a variety of artful spirits from our own Summit community as the relationship between the arts and spirituality is explored.
Feb.17: Special Guest – Connie Barlow
Connie and her husband, The Reverend Michael Dowd, are members of the UU Church of the Larger Fellowship and have been called "America's evolutionary evangelists.” For more than 5 years, they have lived entirely on the road, delivering talks at more than 250 UU congregations, as well as for other religious and secular groups. Connie is the author of four popular science books that bridge evolution and meaning. This promises to be a special service with Connie Barlow as our guest.
Feb. 24: Contemporary Human Slavery: Preserving the Inherent Worth and Dignity of All
Mark Wheeler, Marissa Ugarte, Executive Director of the Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition, and others will explore the problem of contemporary human slavery and trafficking, with emphasis on the local dimensions of the problem.
Under Re-construction– Please Forgive Our Appearance
From the Editor
Life is full of change. And one that marches on, regardless of whether or not you want to follow, is technology and our culture. Today the two are intertwined. Email, websites and blogs. I resisted email and cell phones but here I am with both. Tools of communication. Communication is critical to any organization and our newsletter is a crucial link to one another and our new visitors. Summit’s website is a crucial link to the rest of the world. LaMar Rogers is taking on the project of making our website more viable and is looking for folks for the Website Committee.
We need to utilize all our tools and resources to their maximum potential. The Scene at Summit has been available for at least 2 years on Summit’s website and ninety-five percent (95%) of our members and friends have internet access so we will not be mailing copies to the entire membership list beginning with March 2008.
There will be a sign-up sheet in the lobby/greeting room on Sundays for those who wish to receive a printed version of the newsletter. We will continue to send The Scene at Summit to our new visitors and have them in the lobby and office. This will save money on postage and save so much valuable time spent formatting all the articles.
Next, we will be updating our directory! With so many new members and friends our beautiful pictorial directory is out of date. The new one will be made “in house,” as they say. There will be print-outs of everyone’s contact information in the lobby for the first 3 Sundays in February. Please find your name on the lists and update any incorrect contact information. If you find everything is correct, please sign next to your name. This will give me verification of who will have seen the list.
Just about everyone is remembering to contact me to put your meetings, etc. on the calendar. This is vital to us as we are getting busier in our facility!
Thank you all for your help and support with the upcoming challenges!
Yours in faith,
Linda Peck
The Scene at Summit’s March 2008 edition deadline will be Monday, February 25th & the Mailing Party will be Thursday, February 28th.

From the Minister’s Mailbox
Dear Ones,
I must begin this month’s column with “thank you”. The installation service and reception were such a wonderful celebration of our relationship and ministry together. And who knew that Summitarians were such fabulous dancers?! Special thanks to all of the installation team leaders: Toni Rogers, Pat Bryning, Mark Wheeler, Gwen Baldwin. And to all of you – so many of you - who helped with the preparations, I offer my deepest gratitude. Your hospitality to my family and the visiting clergy and guests did not go unnoticed. Once again, I felt proud to say “I am the minister of this awesome congregation.”
The remainder of the year will be filled with lots of opportunities to be involved in Summit activities. New programs will be introduced, new task forces will be formed, new members will be welcomed, and new challenges will appear. I’m looking forward to embracing all of it with you.
Yours for the good cause,
Rev. Kathleen
From the President’s Desktop
Wow! Wasn’t the installation just an incredible event? A time for rejoicing and celebrating with Reverend Kathleen our future ministry together; a time of music and laughter and fun; a time of fellowship with one another. Thank you again to everyone who made the day so incredible - the service, the music, the food, the beautiful facilities, everything was wonderful. What a great community!
As many of you now know, installation Sunday was Andrea Newall’s final day with us as choir director. We are so blessed for the four years that she shared her tremendous musical talent with us. The beautiful music of the choir brought meaning and joy to each of our fellowship’s recent milestones, setting the appropriate atmosphere for each service. Thank you again Andrea.
We are currently searching for a new choir director. If you know of anyone with the talent and interest, please refer them to Ed Henry.
Wasn’t the installation the perfect inauguration of our salon kitchen? Thanks to all who helped plan, purchase and install all the pieces - (right up to the night before!) John McQuaide, Alan McQuaide, Mark Wheeler, Joe Braunwarth, Mark Bryning, LaMar Rogers, Suzanne McQuaide, Pat Bryning, Jenny Saar, Alix Hart, Gwen Curry, Jeff Saar, and Bill Saar. Their efforts saved us the cost of hiring a contractor. This will be a wonderful resource for many activities and events to come. What shall we tackle next? The landscaping?
While facilities development has received a lot of attention, given our new role as homeowner, I would also like to commend those who have maintained the core of our spiritual life. Throughout the transition, our social action activities have not only continued but increased, as have educational activities for our youth and adults. It is also wonderful that we continue to have fun with one another! Thanks to everyone for supporting all of these essential activities.
As always, please let me know if you have concerns or suggestions. I value your input.
Debbie
Religious Exploration for Children and Youth
COMING OF AGE UPDATE: Last September, nine 7th, 8th and 9th graders committed to a 26-session Coming of Age program. Five adults committed to facilitating the sessions. Nine other adults committed to being paired with the youth as mentors. They are now a bit more than halfway through the program. So far, they have considered values, rules for living, the move from childhood to youth-hood, how to cope when bad things happen, and after-death beliefs. They have survived an activity-packed rainy camping trip in October. They have assisted at Summit’s Auction and Rev. Kathleen’s Installation. They and their mentors have developed “elevator speeches.” (An elevator speech is how you answer the question, “What’s a Unitarian Universalist?” in the time it takes for an elevator to go from the lobby to the sixth floor.) The youth and their mentors are working in pairs on community service projects of their own design. All of these discussions and activities lead toward the faith statements that each will be writing in the spring. The Coming of Age service on Sunday, May 4, will include the sharing of these faith statements. Please mark your calendars and be part of this special service.
FIELDTESTING OPPORTUNITY: We have been approved to participate in field testing three new programs for children being developed by the Unitarian Universalist Association. These are part of a new series of programs and resources for all ages called “Tapestry of Faith” which will be available online at no cost. Our first/second grade group will work with “Creating Home,” about the joys, protections and responsibilities that come with belonging to a family home as well as a congregational home. Our third through fifth grade group will work with “Moral Tales,” a series of stories and activities providing children with the opportunity to explore goodness and justice and to begin developing their own moral compasses. Sixth graders will work with “Toolbox of Faith,” which presents 16 tools over 16 sessions, each tool a symbol for an admirable quality (such as a flashlight for justice, a compass for integrity and sandpaper for humor). To learn more about the Tapestry of Faith program, go online to www.uua.org/religiouseducation/curricula/tapestryfaith/index.shtml and if you would like to lend a hand with this field testing, please let me know. The odds of an enjoyable and interesting time are very good!

Helping Others In East County and Beyond Our Borders
Empty Bowls – Thanks to the many people who contributed to the success of our first Empty Bowls event at our new facility. Special thanks to Neal and Tom Biggert for their talent and generosity in teaching others to make bowls and for providing the supplies to do so. Kudos to the many adults and children for crafting our bowls. Thanks, too, to our cooks, Warren Nelson and Pierre Vaughn, for providing the soup. There are also people making cornbread and corn muffins, Ed Davis, Al Daum, Connie Henry, Linda Peck, Suzanne Ghorpade and Patti Robison-Heyer. A big thanks goes to the organizers, Deena Tuttle, Viraj Ward and, coordinator, Rene Schad. And bravo to Connie Henry for her skills that organized the kids for this project! We are grateful to each of you who purchased a bowl of soup. The money collected will be used to feed the hungry of East County through programs at Crisis House.

Program Spotlight
This month’s spotlight shines on a new group: The Summit Knitting Ministry!
With nearly a dozen interested Summitarians and friends present at our information meetings, we are ready to begin this new ministry at Summit. The knitting ministry is for women, men, and mature children who love to knit, crochet, do other handiwork, or want to learn how! We plan on creating pieces for both outreach to the wider community, and inreach to the Summit community. You don’t have to have attended the info. meeting to become a part of this ministry. You don’t even have to attend meetings every month to become a part of this ministry. You simply need to have a passion for ministering to others in a way that very literally uses our hands! If you are interested in the knitting ministry and have not let Rev. Kathleen know, please do so (562-0833). Our first meeting will be THURS., FEB. 7, 1:30-3pm. We are looking to add an evening meeting as well, so if you are interested, please let Rev. Kathleen know.
Attention All Summit Artists
All artists that are interested in displaying their work at Summit, please call Gwen Curry, 619-461-8264, email gwendacurry@cox.net, or Joan Chan, 619-466-4760, email jmcpc@cox.net. We are interested in works that can be hung the walls of the Greeting Room and the Office. This includes paintings of any media and textiles such as quilts and weavings. Group shows will also be possible. We will be changing the present show in late February. Each show will have an opening and reception for the artist(s).
Meet the Minister on the 2nd Sunday of the month. Visitors and new members are welcome to join Rev. Kathleen after the worship service on the 2nd Sunday of the month, Feb. 10, from 11:30-noon. We will meet in the reception area of the office for informal discussion in order to get to know one another and give you an opportunity to ask the minister questions regarding Unitarian Universalism and the Summit community.
Summit Singers Choir
A task force to find a replacement for our choir director, Andrea Newall, has been formed and includes Rev. Kathleen Green, President, Debbie Wingard, Personnel Chair, Sandy Bernstein, and Finance Chair, Lisa Garvey, and Sunday Services Committee Chair, Ed Henry, who is also chairing this committee. Andrea is leaving because of health concerns. In order to find the best available person, the committee has placed a position announcement on the UU Musicians Network web-site, in the Cluster Newsletter and our own newsletter, and on music department bulletin boards at local colleges and universities.
Please note: Choir rehearsals for the spring will begin on Wed., February 6, at 7:00 pm under the direction of Summit member, Neal Biggart. We will be preparing for the Easter service. Please join us!
From the Gardening Committee Chair

Apologies to anyone I missed.

Membership Committee
Explore Becoming a Member of Summit
Have you been visiting Summit and feel ready to explore the possibility of joining our membership? Come to our Summit Orientation, on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 9:30-noon, and on Sunday, Feb. 24, from 11:30-1:30. Childcare will be provided on both days, as well as a light breakfast on Sat. and lunch on Sun. Discussions will address our spiritual journeys and the history of Unitarian Universalism, the Summit culture and programs, as well as the rewards, responsibilities & requirements of membership. Our minister, Rev. Kathleen Green will facilitate the sessions, with other Summit leaders participating throughout. By the end of the orientation on Sunday, you'll have a good sense of what Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is all about, and whether or not this is the place you want to call your spiritual home.
Those who decide to become members will be invited to attend a New Member Reception with our Board of Directors (date to be announced) , and will be formally welcomed into our membership during a worship service in March. Call 619-562-0833 or email the office at summitunitarian@sbcglobal.net to reserve your space for the orientation sessions. Feel free to contact Membership chairperson, Elaine Harper, or Rev. Kathleen, with any questions. Hope to have you with us!
Summit Opportunities for You!
As the new year begins, and we shift our schedules and lives a bit with resolutions, or perhaps new goals, consider putting Summit at the top of your list. We have a number of opportunities for volunteers and would greatly appreciate your time and talent. With each of these opportunities we are asking for only a 6-month commitment – just to the end of the church year (June)!
Hospitality Crew: Join Summit’s hostess with the mostest, Janet Dixon, prepare our coffee and refreshment table for social time after the service on Sundays. With just 5 crew members, each person would only have to take care of preparations once a month! Janet will provide training. If you enjoy our social time on Sunday, and think this is an important part of what Summit offers to our community and guests each week, please contact Janet 619-465-1160, and let her know you want to be part of the Hospitality Crew. This opportunity does not require any committee meetings!
Office Volunteer: Summit’s office volunteers are an integral part of our day-to-day operations. Administrator, Linda Peck, is looking for additional help on Thursday & Fridays afternoons. If you enjoy speaking on the phone, greeting people, and helping with light clerical work, you will be right at home in our office. Please contact Linda, 619-562-0833, for more info. This opportunity does not require any committee meetings!
Sunday Set-Up Team: If you are more of a behind-the-scenes type of person, and can get to Summit at 9:30 on Sunday mornings, you are just who we’re looking for to serve on a Sunday Set-Up Team! Both our Membership Committee and Sunday Services Committee can use some help in seeing that our greeting room and sanctuary are ready on Sunday mornings. A team of 4 or 5 will ensure that no one person is responsible more than once a month. This opportunity simply requires a willingness to set up chairs if necessary, make sure that hymnals are in place, etc. Again, no committee meetings! Please contact Rev. Kathleen 619-562-0833 and let her know you’re in!
Facilities Leader: Who do you contact when you notice a light bulb is burned out or a faucet is leaking at Summit? We have a group of handy members willing to help and a budget for professional repairs if extra expertise is needed, but we need someone to be the point of contact and to coordinate the efforts. Please contact Debbie Wingard at 619-287-6960 and let her know if you are the one!
Grounds Leader: Have a green thumb? Enjoy working outside? Want to help Summit look it’s best? Join Al Mork as co-leader of a team of volunteers who augment the efforts of our weekly gardener. We plan to increase the gardener’s hours in 2008, and Joe Braunwarth is leading an effort to create a landscape master plan, so should be a great time for gardening at Summit! Please contact Debbie Wingard 619-287-6960 for more info or to volunteer.
Greeter Training: Our new members will be serving as greeters during their first year of membership and we invite you to consider joining them. Welcoming people on Sunday mornings, as they enter our campus is an important task and we need people of all ages and abilities to serve as greeters. If you can give of yourself once a quarter, or more, please contact Patti Robison-Heyer 619-569-4955, and attend one of our training sessions: 9am on Sun. 1/27 or 11:30am on Sun. 2/3 both sessions held in the office conference room.
A Note from Your Administrator ~
Many of you may not be aware that we have a janitorial service that comes only once a week on Friday mornings. This is what our budget allows. There isn’t a volunteer group that cleans or picks up after gatherings or functions so we need to be mindful of leaving cups, water bottles and papers laying around. Please consider that people coming into the facility after committee meetings and workshops may not be just other members of the congregation. We now have weddings and memorial services as well as groups that rent space from time to time. Some of us bring family members and friends to “show-off our very own church home.”
Another area of concern is liquids in the sanctuary. We all have the best intentions to be really careful but we do live in a world of random chaos. So, please refrain from bringing juices, coffee and sodas into the sanctuary.
Thank you for your help with this and please remember to recycle! Look for the blue receptacles for your water bottles, soda cans, and clean paper.

The flowers at our Sunday services always add a soft spirit to the room. If you would be interested in commemorating a personal special occasion or honoring a loved one by providing a flower arrangement for a particular Sunday, contact Barbara Jania-Smith at 619-461-7039. You and your occasion will be mentioned in that Sunday’s order of service. Thank you!
Board of Director Meetings
The Summit Board usually meets on the third Thursday of every month. Visitors are welcome to come and observe, and the agenda will be posted on the web-based calendar by Monday the week of the meeting for your convenience. If you have a topic you would like to present to the Board, please contact Debbie Wingard, President, by Monday, the second week of the month, in order to be considered for the agenda.
Solar Electrical System
Norm Dessel has donated his time and expertise to design and contract for a solar energy system. There remains a short time to qualify for state rebates. Although we are hopeful that we can raise the $30,000 needed, we can cancel the contract should we fall short. Several members have approached me wishing to, in addition to their pledges, donate funds toward the solar energy system. We are happy to answer any questions. ~ John McQuaide, Treasurer
From the Caring Committee…
Summit’s Caring Committee is responsible for providing transportation for those members who are unable to drive and need help getting to our Sunday service, meetings or medical appointments. If you are willing and able to help occasionally, please let us know. We’ll try very hard to make it convenient for you. Please contact Rod Orth at 619-583-3405.
