October 7: This Is My Story
On this Columbus Day Weekend, we will honor the Native American tradition of storytelling. Oral tradition has been an integral part of ancient civilizations and religious life by not only trying to answer the big questions of life but also by sharing lessons of value and morals. As you listen to stories from within our community, you will be invited to consider your own story and those stories you may have heard as a child, or told your own children. Summitarians will share their stories and Elaine Harper and Richard Wilkie will provide music. If you have a story you would like to share, contact Carol Rawlins at 619-644-1963 or cbrawlins@cox.net.
October 14: More Than Plentiful Rev. Kathleen A. Green
The first in Rev. Kathleen’s Harvest Series, this service focuses on the seasonal harvest and the idea of abundance.
October 21: The Cheerful Reaper Rev. Kathleen A. Green
The second in Rev. Kathleen’s Harvest Series, this service focuses on the metaphorical harvest and what we choose to reap.
October 28: Day of the Dead Celebration Rev. Kathleen A. Green
The third and last in Rev. Kathleen’s Harvest Series, this service focuses on the cultural harvest and how we honor our ancestors by celebrating their lives. Please bring a memento that symbolizes your beloved dead – a small photo, favorite food, small token, favorite flower. Our children are also encouraged to participate by bringing something for our altar.
Religious Exploration for Children and Youth at Summit
The new Sunday School year is underway, and the most important work so far has been the forging of covenants. The members of each class have worked together on agreements for how they will treat each other. The agreements have been written out, signed and posted in each classroom, and they will be referred back to regularly as guides in being with one another.
Thanks to all who shopped at R.E.’s end of summer sale! $305 was brought in for Wildcoast, an organization that has been able to save more than one million acres of coastal wildlands, to continue its work to protect endangered sea turtles, and advocate for stronger efforts to control the sewage water coming from the Tijuana River that spoils San Diego beaches. Recently, Wildcoast also helped broker a deal that will preserve 140,000 acres of Laguna San Ignacio in Baja, an area inhabited by birds, green sea turtles and bottlenose dolphins, and the yearly destination of thousands of gray whales to give birth.
Check out the new recycling board on the hallway wall between R.E. and the greeting room. Electronics? Furniture? Kitchen equipment? Toys? You name it. Write what goods you would like to offer (along with your contact information) on the slip provided and post it on the board along with a suggested donation that can be put in the attached container. If there’s something you’re looking for, post that along with your contact info. Individuals contact each other and make the switch. (Please don’t bring the items in to Summit – just their descriptions on the recycling board!) Questions? Speak with Shelley Lekven at coffee time.
MANY THANKS to our September R.E. volunteers: Diane Slagle, Mark Wheeler, Laurel Bernstein, Teresa Palombo, Doris Wascher, Mary Braunwarth, Chris Steussy, Jack Shu, Alan McQuaide, MC Patton, Leslie Robard, Ann Prather, Lulu Lacono, Ann Olson, Mahrya Hafner, Suzanne McQuaide, Barbara Jania-Smith and Don Jania-Smith.

Dear Ones,
Rev. Kathleen A. Green From the Minister’s Mailbox
We are entering into a new season and time of harvest. Well, that’s what my calendar tells me! If I were back in New England it would be more obvious with foliage turning brilliant shades of copper and scarlet, pumpkin stands dotting the landscape in even the smallest of hamlets and the sight of warm sweaters and jackets becoming the norm. But even though the palm trees in my yard are leafy green and the beach still beckons with warm sand, I know that the harvest season is a part of life for San Diegans. As school schedules settle in, extended vacations become sweet memories, routines become familiar, the evening skies come upon us earlier, and the chilly nights compel us to take comfort in warm blankets, we draw our friends and family members close. We harvest the relationships we’ve been nurturing, growing, and tending. We harvest the warmth of compassion in our spiritual community. The seeds have been sown and the time is right to harvest.
October will be another busy month at Summit and we will all be working hard to keep everything going as smoothly as possible. We will be harvesting the talent, time, and resources of the beloved community. Our lay leadership does much of this harvest work. I feel fortunate to work with such strong and dedicated people. Please extend your own gratitude and add your efforts to the harvest.
Yours for the good cause,
Rev. Kathleen
We wish to congratulate Pat and Mark Bryning on the wedding of their daughter Jennifer! The wedding took place in Washington, D.C. in September.
This month Linda Peck is celebrating her 5th year as Summit’s office staff. Yipee! It has been an amazing journey with you!
There are moments on most days when I feel a deep and sincere gratitude, when I sit at the open window, and there is a blue sky or moving clouds. ~ Käthe Kollwitz (This quote was rediscovered in Summit’s Quotable Cookbook. There are still copies available for purchase in the office.)
Freethinkers Tuesday October 2 from 7p.m. to 9 p.m. - organizational meeting in the CRE main room. Everyone is most welcome. Come and tell us what kind of programs you think the Freethinkers should have in the future, how the programs should be selected, and how they should be run. If there is extra time there will be a free wheeling discussion of current events (bull session). For information on Freethinkers activities, please call Wendell or Carol Rawlins, 619- 644-1963.
October 28: Day of the Dead

Our children are also encouraged to participate by bringing something for our altar.
Feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, ideas or to talk about ways you can become involved.
For important tidbits we don’t want to miss.

September is often seen as the start of the year – the start of the school year, the start of Fall, the start of the holiday season. At Summit, September marked many significant beginnings as well – the start of Reverend Kathleen’s ministry in the pulpit, the start of a new Coming of Age class, the start of a new year of Children’s RE and our first (beautiful!) photo directory.
September also included a very inspirational Ministerial Start Up Weekend. Thanks to everyone who participated in Friday’s congregational gathering with Reverend Ken Brown, our District Executive of the UUA Pacific Southwest District. The sharing of our hopes for the coming years was a wonderful lead in to the retreat on Saturday for the Board and staff. Reverend Brown skillfully facilitated this effort, where we reviewed the many necessary roles and responsibilities needed to lead our congregation. One exercise involved identifying who had primary responsibility for each identified task, which led to a very productive discussion of how we would work together on each, for it quickly became apparent that none of the tasks could be handled by the congregation, the board or the staff alone.
This exercise also identified many areas where we have current very practical needs. For example, we are reassessing our landscaping with an eye to native plants that are drought tolerant (and less expensive to water). Any member or friend with an interest in landscape planning or hands on gardening, would be welcomed with open arms! Also in the “green” arena, Norm Dessel has researched the use of solar energy to lower our electricity costs and identified a state program that will lower our installation costs. We are now looking for grants or other sources of funding to cover the rest. Anyone interested in grant writing? One of our college students, Tom Schad, has volunteered to rejuvenate our website. We could use others to help with the web, as well as newsletters and other avenues of communication. The trick is to find something you enjoy doing. We have plenty of opportunities!
I would like to conclude by saying how happy I am to see so many new members and visitors at Summit! Please know that we welcome your participation in any activity that interests you. We also welcome your ideas and suggestions. Please feel free to contact me, either on Sunday or during the week by email (dwingard@ucsd.edu). I would love to hear from you.
The Honoring/Memorial Fund
This Fund has been established to accept contributions to celebrate moments in our lives such as weddings, and to commemorate deaths of loved ones or friends. Membership News
Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship enthusiastically encourages the participation of friends and newcomers in our fellowship. We hope you have enjoyed the services, engaged in meaningful conversations with new acquaintances and found activities that pique your interest. We recognize all that you could bring to Summit and may be interested in learning more about us at two scheduled orientation classes on Saturday morning, November 17th and after services on Sunday, November 18th. For those interested in becoming members of the congregation, we encourage you to attend these classes conducted by our Minister, Rev. Kathleen Green, together with members of membership and other committees. It would be helpful to let Elaine Harper at elaine.harper@cox.net know if you plan to attend.
The pictorial directories from Lifetouch are being distributed. We have a very limited number of extra copies for $10 each payable to SUUF. Please see or contact Linda (in the Summit office) if you wish to purchase one. Two corrections: with Norm Dessel is his wife, Mary; Martha Cardenas’ email address which should read garymar2000@aol.com. Please let Linda know of any additional corrections.

Flowers for Sunday Services
The flowers at our Sunday services always add a soft spirit to the room. If you would be interested in commemorating a personal special occasion or honoring a loved one by providing a flower arrangement for a particular Sunday, contact Barbara Jania-Smith at 619-461-7039. You and your occasion will be mentioned in that Sunday’s order of service. Thank you!
Thanks to Summiteer Recyclers!
We really appreciate everyone bringing bottles and cans each week. We have a request: Could you give a quick rinse to bottles and cans that had something other than water in them? It would make our job a lot easier (and smell better).
Lunch Bunch
All Summitarians who would like more fellowship and food after Sunday services are welcome to meet with the lunch bunch. On October 7 we will eat Italian style at La Trattoria, 9720-A Mission Gorge Road, Santee (by Best Buy). On the 14th, we'll be at Mimi’s, 9812 Mission Gorge Road, Santee. Then on October 21st, we'll "gorge" at Skootz, 9535 Mission Gorge Road, Santee (across from the Post Office). On October 28th, we dine at Olive Garden, 9800 Mission Gorge Road, Santee.
If you intend to join us, please print your name on the hanging sign-up sheet in the lobby during the coffee time so we can phone ahead at 11:30 for reservations. See you there!
EXCITING LIBRARY ACQUISITIONS!
Check out the fabulous collection of new books on display in our library. Debbie Wingard and Connie Henry purchased these books at the General Assembly, with funds donated by the Rev. Tom Owen-Towle’s book signing. Stop by and peruse the interesting titles and then check out something that peaks your interest. Understanding the Bible by John A. Buehrens is a favorite of Rev. Kathleen’s! Contact our librarian, Gini Schmitz, for more information.
Summit Circle Dinners!
On Saturday, October 20th, at 6:30 pm we will have our Summit Circle Dinner for the Fall. A circle dinner is a gathering of 6-8 adults at the home of one of our Summit Hosts. This is a great way to get to know new acquaintances and reconnect with old friends in a casual setting. You may now sign up at two levels of commitment as a host.
Type A host - Be the traditional circle dinner host. Provide the house, main dish, food coordination and contact all the guests. OR;
Type B host - Be slightly less dedicated but still virtuous host. Provide the house and the tableware but let someone else prepare the main dish, plan and coordinate the food and contact the other guests.
Or, you can sign up at two different levels of commitment as a guest .
Guest 1 - Be the guest who prepares the main dish, coordinates the food and contacts the other guests. OR: Guest 2 - Be the traditional guest. Bring your requested food contribution and gratitude to the dinner.
Please sign up in the greeting room/lobby with Suzanne McQuaide or email suzanne-m@cox.net or call 619-229-0081. New members and friends, we want you too!!

Social Action Corner - Service Is Our Prayer
Esperanza Collection – Thank you so much for your support of Lina Martinez, the Summit-sponsored student at the Colegio D’Esperanza in Tijuana. Over $480 was collected on Sunday, Sept. 16. Way to go, Summitarians!
Challenge Day – Tyra Miles, participating as a facilitator for the Challenge Day event at Santana High School, reports the $412 Summit contributed to this activity was very well spent. The day was a transforming experience for facilitators and students alike. Learning to love and respect others is a powerful tool to take through life.
Cluster Representatives – Our point person for Cluster-wide efforts concerning environmental issues is Chris Steussy while Bill Stanhope is our point person for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) issues. Thanks Chris and Bill for volunteering. (By the way, the “Cluster” refers to all the UU churches in San Diego County.)
How can you help Summit’s efforts in social action?
Financial: October's social action special collection will be on Sunday, October 21st in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and in support of the Crisis House Transitional Housing Program. Cash and check contributions will be used to purchase household items for the Crisis House Transitional Housing Program in support of women in transition from domestic violence situations. Make checks payable to SUUF. FYI: Summit member, Pat Bryning, regularly attends East County Domestic Violence Coalition meetings as part of an effort to include East County churches in assisting individuals affected by domestic violence. Pat and Tyra Myles are both part of a group that is planning the East Family Justice Center, which will provide domestic violence victims with a variety of services all in one location. If you know a person that needs domestic violence-related information or help, call the 24-Hour Toll Free Crisis Line at 1-888-DVLINKS (385-4657). Contact Vic White for more information on this topic.
Please check out the Fair Trade Coffee table on Sunday October 14th. Fair Trade for coffee farmers means community development, health, education, and environmental stewardship. Note: Fair Trade Coffee sales will be moving from the third Sunday of each month to the second Sunday. Once the weather cools, chocolate bars will again be available. Please contact Lynne Slaughter if you are interested in purchasing tea as it will be available only upon request.
People Power: Sunday, September 30 – San Diego AIDS Walk in Balboa Park at 8 am. Please join other Summitarians supporting a great cause either by walking or sponsoring our team. Go to www.aidswalksd.org to register or donate. Our team is Unitarian Universalists of San Diego County. Contact Laurel Bernstein with questions.
The next meeting of Amnesty International is on Monday, October 29 at 7:00 pm. Contact Viraj Ward (viraj57@sdcoe.k12.ca.us) if you have further questions.
The Social Action Committee plans to host a public forum entitled "The Global Marshall Plan, an Effective Alternative to War Spending.” A similar forum was held at First UU Church last April with an enthusiastic response. The Network of Spiritual Progressives will present the event. After WW II, the U.S. invested $13 billion to rebuild Europe resulting in the greatest period of economic growth in European history. Not only did Europe benefit, but the U.S. reaped much more than it sowed by fostering its allies and trading partners. The NSP proposes that we replicate the success of the original Marshall Plan on a global scale. If you are interested in helping put on this event, please call Bill Stanhope at 619/306-2378 or email him at Bill0304@aol.com.
From the Office Administrator . . .
I want to thank everyone for being so supportive of the changes at the Summit office and making appointments. As you can see by the new calendars on the hall wall, we are off and running!
The “Salon” is receiving high marks for its new look and functionality. More committees are meeting not only in the offices, but in all areas of our facility. If anyone is planning to just drop by or send someone by to take care of committee business, or send workers to repair things, you’d best call ahead. This way I can possibly get what is needed in the various areas before meetings start. It’s disruptive to have people jostling in and out while committees are meeting.
Again, thanks for all your support!
~ Linda Peck

Teen Update
Summit’s teens are currently working on several projects. We have been reading and discussing Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains, raising awareness about medical conditions in third-world countries. We have monthly discussions about environmental issues and the greening of Summit, most recently highlighting the problem of food transportation. Many of us will be walking or volunteering at the upcoming AIDS Walk (September 30).
In addition, we will soon be starting a new curriculum, Sacred Threads, focusing on Eastern religions. We continue to appreciate all recycling donations and would be grateful if you could rinse your metal cans and plastic bottles before bringing them.
Board of Director Meetings
The Summit Board usually meets on the third Thursday of every month. Visitors are welcome to come and observe, and the agenda will be posted on the web-based calendar by Monday the week of the meeting for your convenience. If you have a topic you would like to present to the Board, please contact Debbie Wingard, President, by Monday, the second week of the month, in order to be considered for the agenda.
Committee/Program Spotlight
(This is a new feature of our newsletter that puts the spotlight on one particular Summit committee or program.)
This month’s spotlight shines on our
Sunday Services Committee
You may have known this group in the past as the Program Committee. The Sunday Services Committee recently changed its name to better reflect the focus of their work – Sunday Services. The committee meets every other month, on the first Tuesday of the month at 4pm, to work with the minister to plan our worship services. Another exciting change in the committee is the role of Service Associates. Service Associates are members of the committee who assist the service leader in carrying out the various details of the Sunday Service. Current members of the Sunday Services Committee are: Ed Henry, Connie Henry, Toni Rogers, Ed Davis, Gwen Baldwin, Carol Rawlins and Rev. Kathleen. If this committee sounds interesting to you please contact Committee Chair Ed Henry 619-460-4794 for more information.
More Sound Volunteers Needed!
Because of the upcoming holiday season and busy lives of our sound crew, I’m looking for a few more people to train on sound.
